Reasons For This War

The main reason for the war between Russia and Ukraine is because of an economic deal that Ukraine was going to sign with European Union on 2013. The Ukraine President, Viktor Yanukovych, rejected the deal. The people of Ukraine believed that he was being pressured to reject the deal by the president of Russiaq, Vladimir Putin. A few days later, the president of Ukraine signed a new deal from Russia in the form of $15 billion in aid and other economic benefits.

The people of Ukraine did not like their President rejecting the European Union’s agreement. For years, the people of Ukraine wanted an economic deal between Ukraine and the more prosperous Western Countries.

Within hours of Ukraine’s President rejected the European Unions agreements, thousands of Ukraine Protestors stormed Kiev, the capital of Ukraine and staged a big protest and asked for the president of Ukraine to resign.

The government of Ukraine took tough actions against the protestors, but the protests continued. On 21 February, 2014, protestors overtook the capital and the presidents residence. Presidents Viktor Yanukorych quickly fled to Russia, fearing for his life. He was also facing charges for the killing of some protestors.

Some of the protestors came to the Ukraine-Russia border. The president of Russia also sent over 100,00 troops to the border.

Fighting began at the border, and moved to Ukraine province of Crimea. Russia has now gained control of Crimea. Fighting is continuing because Crimea was once a Ukrainian province but is now claimed by Russia.putin-helicopter_2840587k
